A novel surgical adhesive, currently in pre-clinical testing, is designed to approximate tissues and prevent fluid accumulation in deep wounds.

TissuGlu is a sprayable deep wound adhesive for securing flaps of tissue. The adhesive is biocompatible and biodegradable, making it safe for internal use. TissuGlu works especially well on planar surfaces, binding tissue layers to eliminate the potential dead space between recently separated tissues, reducing the fluid accumulation, and maintaining tissues in position for natural healing to occur. Unlike fibrin-based products, it is strong, easy to use, and contains no human or animal product derivatives. The bond created with TissuGlu has been found to be as strong after one hour as a normal wound is after a week of healing. Moreover, because the adhesive is created from sugars and amino acids, the components it breaks down into are designed to be benign and to lead to virtually no immune system response. TissuGlu is under development by Cohera Medical (Pittsburgh, PA, USA).

Seroma formation (fluid accumulation after surgery) is among the most common post-surgical complications, occurring in up to 50% of certain surgical procedures.
