A watch-based pulse detection device serves as both a motion sensor and a pulse sensor, using a piezoelectric disk to detect the radial pulse rate.

The Wriskwatch is designed to anticipate, identify, and communicate medical emergencies through pulse rates. The watch not only detects loss of pulse, it also identifies a potential fall or activation of a personal panic button. First, the system activates a designated key on the user’s cell phone, programmed so that one touch automatically dials emergency services, as well as broadcasting the information to other responders. A powerful timesaving feature called LifeTalk automatically activates built-in speakerphones in the cell phone and landline phones, enabling hands-free communication with a designated friend or family member responding to the emergency.

The second stage involves broadcast level features, such as the automated external defibrillator (AED) Locator feature, which specifies the location of the nearest identified local AED device to responders. Cell phones equipped with a GPS Locator relay the user’s position to responders whenever an alarm activates. A cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Coach audibly guides on proper CPR and AED response procedures, eliminating the need to memorize details from prior CPR training. The system also offers access to basic personal health information regarding medications, allergies, and any relevant medical conditions. In the event of an emergency, this information is broadcast to responders.

The third level, Coordinate, provides advanced cardiac intervention for those at particular risk from heart disease, and incorporates a home-based AED device and support system, including features such as automatic door unlocking, lifetime servicing of the AED device, event recording, a multiparty talk venue among responders, including a personal physician or specialist and other features. The Wriskwatch is under development by Emergency Medical Technologies (North Miami Beach, FL, USA).
